• Start slow

People psyched about their new year’s resolutions often want to jump right into hour-long workouts, even if they haven’t worked out in years, said Shaunae Medina, healthy living director for the Southeast Armed Services Family YMCA. When they realize they can’t, they often get discouraged and give up. Instead, she suggests, start off with a workout you can easily do so you remain motivated.

“Sometimes people want to get in there and get instant gratification,” she said. “Start with just 10 minutes a day and then work your way up. I tell them they will be sore, and that’s not something they want to hear.”

• Create near-term, obtainable goals

While you might want to lose 30 pounds by the end of the year, a goal that far out could throw you off track, said Cooper, owner of Pikes Peak CrossFit.

“It’s so far out and so distant, that if you haven’t lost 10 pounds in the first part of the year, you give up,” Cooper said.

Instead, he said, create goals you can accomplish — such as a number of gym visits for a certain week.

Ratz, of the YMCA, suggests goals that are realistic, measurable and have a timeline.

 • Make a change for life, not just a year

Cooper said people who change the way they live are more forgiving when they slip up.

“If you come to me and say ‘I want to change my life,’ if you don’t do it one day, you haven’t failed,” Cooper said. “You can make it up the next day.”
